Biography

Timothy Stover is an acclaimed American glass artist known for his intricate and innovative glass sculptures. Born in Bucyrus, Ohio, Stover’s early fascination with assembling and joining shapes began in his father’s woodshop. This early exposure to craftsmanship laid the foundation for his future artistic endeavors.

Early Life and Education

Stover’s journey into the world of art began with his passion for creating from parts, a skill he honed in his father’s workshop. In 2001, he pursued formal education in art at the University of Toledo, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Sculpture. During his time at the university, he focused on bronze casting and metal fabrication. It was in his fourth year that he met local sculptor Jack Schmidt, who introduced him to the medium of glass.

Advanced Studies and Artistic Development

Stover’s newfound interest in glass led him to work at the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion, where he gained valuable experience and techniques from various artists. To further his expertise, he pursued a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) with a concentration in glass at Kent State University. During this period, he traveled extensively across the United States, attending workshops and refining his skills.

Stover received scholarships to study at prestigious institutions such as the Pilchuck Glass School and the Corning Museum of Glass. At Pilchuck, he was introduced to a method of laminating glass, which significantly influenced his artistic approach. This process involved gluing, grinding, and polishing glass into new shapes, aligning well with his meticulous attention to detail.

Artistic Style and Techniques

Timothy Stover’s work is characterized by his exploration of linear patterns, contrasting colors, textures, and shapes. He treats glass much like wood, assembling parts into abstract shapes that create optical illusions. His sculptures often feature internal structures that appear and disappear as viewers change their perspective. This effect is achieved through a painstaking process of assembling blocks with colored adhesives, cutting them into sections, and revealing intricate patterns through paper-thin lines of color.

Stover’s current bodies of work include reassembling broken glass sections into new creations and using colored adhesives to produce dazzling visual effects within his sculptures. His dedication to detail and innovative techniques have earned him recognition in the art world.

Awards and Recognitions

Timothy Stover has received several awards and recognitions throughout his career. Notably, he was a recipient of the Arts Commission’s Accelerator Grant in June 2018. He has also been awarded scholarships to study at the Pilchuck Glass School and the Corning Museum of Glass, where he later served as a teaching assistant.

Exhibitions and Representation

Stover’s work is represented by four national galleries, and he has participated in numerous group exhibitions and invitationals both in the United States and abroad. His sculptures have been showcased in various prestigious venues, reflecting his growing influence in the field of glass art.

Current Endeavors

Timothy Stover currently resides and works in Toledo, Ohio. He teaches at the University of Toledo and serves as the casting instructor for the Toledo Museum of Art. His ongoing commitment to his craft and his innovative approach to glass sculpture continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide.

In summary, Timothy Stover’s journey from a woodshop in Ohio to becoming a renowned glass artist is a testament to his dedication, skill, and creativity. His unique approach to glass sculpture and his contributions to the art community make him a significant figure in contemporary art.
