Biography
IRDS is the collaborative name of Czech glass artists Ingrid Račková and David Suchopárek. They have been working together since 2001, creating stunning glass artworks that blend geometric precision with organic fluidity. Both artists are graduates of Prague’s Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design, where Ingrid studied at the glass studio under Professor Vladimír Kopecký, and David specialized in the use of glass in architecture under Professor Marian Karel.
Artistic Approach and Style
IRDS is renowned for their meticulous craftsmanship and innovative use of glass. Their work can be categorized into three main aspects:
- Geometric Objects: These are made from cut and layered colored glass, often forming pyramids that serve as visual and emotional focal points. The optical effects and color combinations are carefully chosen to make each piece unique.
- Dynamic Melted Glass Sculptures: These sculptures feature a combination of geometric and organic patterns, with techniques such as cutting, matting, polishing, and layering. Color plays a significant role, adding visual definition and depth.
- Glass Paintings: Initially focused on geometric constructions, IRDS has shifted towards a purely abstract approach. They use glass as a painter uses canvas, emphasizing its optical and aesthetic properties to create dominant, space-defining pieces.
