Biography

Early Life and Education

Steve Klein was born in Los Angeles in 1946. He initially pursued a career in sales and management related to industrial parts and supplies. Klein’s artistic journey began later in life, at the age of 50, when he enrolled at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, in 1996. This marked the beginning of his career in glass art, where he made his first glass sculpture and developed a passion for the medium.

Artistic Career

Klein’s work is characterized by his distinctive kiln-formed and blown glass pieces. His art often explores themes of memory, consequences, and the fragile state of balance. Influenced by Abstract Expressionist painters, sculptors, and the Constructivist movement, Klein’s work combines shape, color, line, texture, and the unique reflective qualities of glass to create compelling visual narratives.

Studio and Inspirations

Steve Klein maintains a studio in La Conner, Washington, surrounded by several hundred acres of farmland with views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Erie. The natural beauty of his surroundings, including seasonal changes and the vibrant colors of daffodil and tulip fields, serves as a significant source of inspiration for his work. Klein’s recent focus has been on environmental themes, particularly global warming and the degradation of natural landscapes.

Teaching and Influence

Klein has been an active educator, teaching and conducting workshops across the United States, Europe, Australia, China, and Taiwan. He has held various roles at the Pilchuck Glass School, including teaching assistant, instructor, staff member, and artist-in-residence. Klein has also reduced his teaching commitments to private, one-on-one classes and residencies with fellow kilnforming artist Richard Parrish.

Exhibitions and Collections

Steve Klein’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums worldwide. Some notable exhibitions include:

  • Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, Washington: A Precipitous Edge (2020), exploring the consequences of global warming.
  • Palm Springs Art Museum: Featuring works like Shelter 2 (2010), which showcases his use of colorful geometric shapes and textures.
  • Museum of Glass, Tacoma, WA
  • Museum of Arts and Design, New York City

  • Tsinghua University Museum, Beijing
  • Tissot Museum, Taipei, Taiwan

  • Racine Art Museum, WI

Awards and Recognition

Klein’s inclusion in prestigious collections and exhibitions indicates significant recognition in the glass art community. His work’s presence in major museums and galleries worldwide attests to his impact and influence as a glass artist.

Artistic Philosophy

Klein’s artistic philosophy revolves around the exploration of personal observations and experiences through the medium of glass. He seeks to create a dialogue between the ideal and the real, capturing the elegance and refined physicality of form, color, texture, and scale. His recent works reflect a deep concern for environmental issues, using his art to raise awareness about the fragility of the natural world.

Conclusion

Steve Klein’s journey from a career in industrial sales to becoming a renowned glass artist is a testament to his passion and dedication to the art form. His work continues to inspire and provoke thought, making significant contributions to contemporary glass art.
