Biography

Ross Richmond is a renowned American glass artist known for his exquisite figurative sculptures and innovative techniques in hot glass. His journey in the world of glass art began in 1991 at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he discovered his passion for the medium.

Early Education and Training

Richmond graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Glass and minoring in Small Metals (jewelry). This diverse educational background laid the foundation for his unique approach to glass sculpture.

In 1997, Richmond’s career took a significant turn when he began working as an apprentice to the legendary glass artist William Morris. He became a full-fledged member of Morris’s team in 1999 and continued to work alongside him until Morris’s retirement in 2007. This experience profoundly influenced Richmond’s artistic development and approach to teamwork in glass art.

Throughout his career, Richmond has had the privilege of working with and learning from some of the most respected names in the glass art world, including:

  • Incorporating color and pattern into his sculptures
  • Using gesture to convey narrative and emotion

All of Richmond’s pieces are blown and hot sculpted by hand, without the use of molds or casting techniques. He employs a unique process of working with glass at different temperatures to achieve his desired forms and details.

Richmond has been awarded several prestigious residencies, including:

  • Tacoma Museum of Glass

In 2016, he participated in a collaborative residency at the Corning Museum of Glass with fellow artist Randy Walker, further expanding his artistic horizons.
