Biography

Early Life and Education

Martin Blank was born on August 29, 1962, in Sharon, Massachusetts. His fascination with art began early, and by the age of 13, he was already engaging with clay at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Blank pursued his passion for glass art at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in 1984, specializing in glass under the tutelage of Bruce Chao.

Professional Career

After graduating, Blank moved to Seattle, a hub for glass art, to work with the renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. He spent over a decade on Chihuly’s team, where he honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of glass as a medium. By the 1990s, Blank had established himself as an independent artist, setting up his own studio, Martin Blank Studios, in Seattle.

Artistic Style and Philosophy

Martin Blank is celebrated for his innovative approach to glass sculpture, particularly his ability to carve space and create dynamic tension between sculptural forms. His work often explores the interplay of negative space and mass, with a focus on fluid, abstract landscapes and figurative sculptures. Blank describes his process as intuitive, aiming to create forms that flow and carry the viewer’s eye around the piece, revealing vital negative spaces.
