Biography

Karin Mørch is a renowned Danish glass artist born in 1977. Her artistic journey is characterized by a deep exploration of form, space, and the unique properties of glass as a medium. Mørch’s work often draws inspiration from simple expressions, finding beauty in the interplay between linear and tilted forms, natural geometry, architecture, and human interactions.

Early Career and Education

Mørch’s formal education in glass art began in 1997 when she attended Engelsholm Art School in Vejle, Denmark, where she studied glassblowing, cold glass techniques, ceramics, and jewelry making. This foundational experience was followed by a series of apprenticeships and assistantships, including:

  • 1997: Assistant to Per Rene Larsen at Fanefjord Glass, Moen, Denmark
  • 1998: Assistant to Niels Chr. Olesen at Det gamle posthus, Skagen, Denmark
  • 1999: Work with cold glass at Joergensen & Moerch Design, Holmegård, Denmark

From 1999 to 2002, Mørch furthered her education at the School of Glass & Ceramics on Bornholm (KADK) in Nexø, Denmark. During this period, she also gained international experience through a work placement at Colin Reid Glass in Stroud, United Kingdom, in 2001.

Professional Development

Following her education, Mørch’s career progressed through various studio affiliations and collaborations:

  • 2003: Rented studio space at Fragile glass workshop, Copenhagen, Denmark
  • 2004-2009: Co-founded and worked at Celsiusglas, a cooperative studio in Copenhagen
  • 2009-2017: Worked as a freelance glass artist, renting studio space from Pipaluk Lake and Joergensen & Moerch Design
  • 2017-present: Member of Luftkraft Glasstudio in Copenhagen

Artistic Approach

Mørch’s artistic process is characterized by a focus on creating space and giving form. She often repeats and varies her techniques, allowing for the development of new ideas and objects. This continuous process of change and exploration is central to maintaining her artistic curiosity.

Notable Projects and Exhibitions

Throughout her career, Mørch has participated in numerous projects and exhibitions:

  • 2000: Participated in Holmegaard’s 175th anniversary workshops and guest designing
  • 2001: Collaborated on the architectural project “Special Collage 1:1” between Aarhus School of Architecture and the School of Glass and Ceramics, Bornholm
  • 2003: Exhibited at the Glass Art Society event in Seattle, USA
  • 2004: Participated in TALENTE 2004 in Munich, Germany
  • 2006: Exhibited at Coburger Glaspreis in Coburg, Germany
  • 2012-2016: Produced the Sustania Award in collaboration with Torben Joergensen for Hvass & Hannibal
  • 2013: Joint exhibition with Pipaluk Lake at Kunstmann Amland, Netherlands

Awards and Grants

Mørch’s talent has been recognized through numerous awards and grants:

  • 2003: Bronze prize at Kunsthåndværkerprisen af 1879
  • 2013: Received the prestigious Hempels Glass Award
  • 2014-2015: Received multiple work and production grants from Statens Kunstfond (Danish Arts Foundation)
