Early Life and Education

Clifford Rainey, born in 1948 in Whitehead, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, is a renowned glass sculptor known for his innovative and interdisciplinary approach to art. Rainey began his artistic journey as a linen damask designer at William Ewart and Son Ltd. from 1965 to 1968. He pursued intensive drawing classes at Belfast College of Art and earned a City and Guilds Certificate in Woven Textile Technology from Belfast College of Technology during this period.

Rainey furthered his education in art and design at several prestigious institutions:

  • Hornsey College of Art, London: Foundation Certificate in Art and Design (1968-1969)
  • Walthamstow School of Art, London: Diploma in Art and Design, specializing in Sculpture and Drawing (1969-1971)
  • Royal College of Art, London: Master of Arts Degree, specializing in glass (1971-1973)

Professional Career

Rainey’s career spans several decades, during which he has established himself as a leading figure in the field of glass sculpture. His early professional experiences include working at Kastrup and Holmegaards Glassworks in Denmark and receiving a traveling scholarship to the Iittala Glassworks in Finland. Between 1973 and 1975, Rainey ran his own glass studio in London.
